KARACHI, April 21: Dollar East completed a resounding nine-wicket victory over Humak Engineering in Islamabad on Sunday to end their maiden venture in the Patron’s Trophy Grade-II cricket tournament with a creditable second-place finish in Group ‘C’.
The Karachi-based outfit, which is managed by former first-class cricketer Zaheer Ahmed and coached by ex-Pakistan opener Sadiq Mohammad, ended up with three victories and two draws in the five matches they played and were desperately unlucky at not making it to the semi-finals. Omar Associates, who topped this pool, qualified for the last-four clash against Group ‘A’ winners Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi from Wednesday.
The other three-day semi-final will be played between Group ‘B’ champions Pakistan Television (PTV) and Group ‘D’ winners Sayid Paper at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium, also from Wednesday. The four-day final is slated to be staged in Mirpur from April 29.
Dollar East – who earned a 132-run lead on the first innings by making 329 thanked to brilliant centuries from Tanvir-ul-Haq (113 off 210 balls with 14 boundaries) and Rehan Rafiq (100 off 130 balls, 10 fours and three sixes) – took the remaining seven wickets that Humak Engineering lost on the third and final day of the league round phase.
Resuming at 106-3, Humak Engineering made 277 in the second innings with Aaqib Shah scoring 74. Fayyaz Butt claimed three for 63.
Dollar East needed only 27.1 overs to reach their target of 146 with Tanvir-ul-Haq (58) and Moinuddin (66) guiding them home.
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) also chalked up a 10-wicket win against Army at the latter’s ground in Rawalpindi but despite finishing level on points with PTV, they failed to qualify for the semi-finals from Group ‘B’ on net run-rate. KPT’s run-rate of 0.361 was far inferior to that of PTV (1.935) with both sides collecting 24 points.
Navy recorded their first win as they whipped Group ‘A’ rivals Saudi Cricket International by innings and 53 runs at the NBP Sports Complex here. Off-spinner Nasir Awais took four for 59 to finish with match figures of nine for 93, while Samiullah had match bag of eight for 108.
