KARACHI, July 7: Well-known cricket commentator and former captain of Pakistan team Wasim Akram is engaged to marry a 30-year-old Australian woman, television channels citing a report in an Australian newspaper said on Sunday.
The Herald Sun said in the report that Mr Akram’s fiancée, Shaniera Thompson, had already converted to Islam and decided to call Pakistan home.
According to the report, Mr Akram proposed to Ms Thompson, a former public relations consultant, on bended knee in her lounge.
It said the 47-year-old former fast bowler also called Ms Thompson’s father, who gave his blessing for the marriage. The pair met in Melbourne in 2011.
Mr Akram said he was happy that he had found love. “I never thought I would get married again, but I am lucky and very happy to find love again,” he remarked.
“It just goes to show that life can give you a second chance.”
Mr Akram’s wife Huma died in 2009. They had two boys, now aged 15 and 12.
