PESHAWAR,  May 17: The city police have launched  a  crackdown against,  what they called, obscenity and arrested 134  ‘outlaws’ here on Saturday.

Official  sources  told  Dawn that  the  police  launched  the operation  against obscenity from Saturday morning  and  arrested 134 persons till evening. The police registered 91 cases  against the outlaws and most of them were booked under section 18  motion picture of PPC, the sources added.

The  police checked audio and video cassettes shops,  medical stores and public transports during the operation, which would be continued for a few more days, they added.

During the operation, the police seized 10 VCRs, 8 CD players, 611  videocassettes,  7 TV sets, 1,350 bottles of  sex  stimulant pills,  258 tape-recorders and 104 posters from public  transport vehicles and also removed tinted glasses from 91 vehicles.

Few days back, the Inspector General of Police, NWFP, Muhammad Saeed  Khan,  has  asked all the DIGs and  DPOs  to  re-launch  a campaign   against  obscenity  and  ensure  eradication  of   all social evils from the society.

Mr Saeed Khan issued these instructions after receiving strict directives from Chief Minister of NWFP, Akram Khan Durrani.

According  to  the  sources,  the IGP  had  issued  a  special circular  in this connection to all the DIGs and DPOs on  Tuesday, directing  them  to re-launch a campaign  against  obscenity  and vulgarity.

The  IGP also took notice of the billboards  carrying  women’s pictures  which  were again erected by the cinema owners  in  the city after its removal in the first phase of the campaign against obscenity, the sources maintained.
