PML-N govt and new challenges

UNLIKE the past in the 1990s, the PML-N government will now be confronted with multi-dimensional problems and challenges. The faltering economy, widespread loadshedding, galloping inflation, growing menace of terrorism and lawlessness are some of the pressing issues which are threatening the national fabric.

In the face of growing awareness among the people about their rights, it would be better if the government took things seriously.

The 18th Amendment and the latest National Finance Award have devolved more authority and resources to the provinces.

The government will, therefore, experience serious resource-constraint, particularly due to huge outstanding internal and external debts , to fulfil its promises, including a bullet train and motor highway from Karachi to Peshawar.

It will immediately need an IMF bailout package which is a multilateral source of aid, while Mr Sharif is committed to breaking the begging bowl.

Under the circumstances, it is essential that the PML-N government deliver with good governance.

It must be kept in mind that an effective and strong opposition is sine qua non for resolving the people’s problems. The policy of reconciliation may facilitate the smooth functioning of the government, but it does weaken the role of the opposition. Likewise, the touchstone of governance must be austerity.
