DERA GHAZI KHAN, May 13: Members of some NGOs found a girl living in miserable conditions at Darul Aman here the other day. The DCO has ordered an inquiry into the case.

Sources said the Darul Aman where as many as 50 women and girls had taken refuge, was a shambles due to mismanagement and criminal negligence on the part of the authorities concerned. Saffo Bibi of Choti Zaireen had been confined to a small room since long. She lost her senses due to inhumane treatment.

An employee of the Darul Aman told this reporter that the girl had been living in the room for the last one year. He alleged that the executive district officer for community and works knew about her case, but never did anything about it.

Members of NGOs visited the centre in the company of district council member Farah Haroon and found Saffo surrounded by her own filth in the small room where she had been locked up for the last one year.

A girl from Layyah, Samreen, has been missing from the Darul Aman for the last six months. It is worth mentioning that a police case in this regard could not be registered due to unknown reasons.

It is being demanded in the social and political circles of the city that a high-level inquiry should be launched into these cases.

Legharis: The Dera police did not have any role in the recovery of Hamza Usman, which was made possible by the efforts of the local members of national and provincial assemblies from the Leghari tribe, claimed Usman Khosa, father of the boy, at a news conference at his house.

Mr Khosa told newsmen that Jafar Khan Leghari and her wife Meena Leghari had played a vital role in the safe recovery of the child. Ms Leghari belongs to a Pashtoon spiritual family and wields considerable influence among Pashtoons.

It is pertinent to mention here that Ms Leghari earlier played a key role in making possible the recovery of a local councillor.

Meanwhile, the Dera police have made irrelevant arrests in connection with the Hamza kidnapping case. Police have arrested the brothers of one of the accused Arif as well as his elderly mother. The main accused, Mukhtiar, Arif and Allah Ditta, are in the custody of NWFP law-enforcement agencies. DIG Humayun Shafi told Dawn that the home ministry would be approached to bring the main accused to Dera Ghazi Khan.
