Local radio planned

GILGIT, May 10: A meeting with a group organized by the Northern Areas Conservation Strategy (NACS) explored the prospects and usefulness of community radio stations in the five districts of the region.

The group mainly comprised the environmental journalists bodies of the region was of the opinion that as the five districts and rural areas were remote from each other, therefore community radio stations could play an important role in disseminating information about the protection of environment and the hazards of uneven development.

Participants said the region had rich cultural heritage, where over five different languages and many religious groups made a unique mosaic.

Community radio stations would enhance awareness among these people about the fragile ecosystem of the region, they added.
