ISLAMABAD, May 23: This year the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has divided the federal capital into three zones, adversely affecting the middle and lower-middle class, Dawn has learnt.

An official of the ministry of water and power, requesting anonymity, said the Diplomatic Enclave and other areas of the Red Zone were part of the high priority zone, and faced only two to three hours of loadshedding.

“Sectors of the E and F series, where influential personalities reside, face five to eight hours of loadshedding, where power is not cut from midnight to 8am,” he said.

“However, residents of the G and I sector are placed in the third zone, and have to face around 12 hours of loadshedding a day,” he said.

In Rawalpindi, electricity is available for only six hours a day despite the claims of the caretaker government that Rs22 billion had been released to thermal units for generation of electricity.

Loadshedding has made the residents miserable, and people have expressed their resentment over the failure of the government.

“Enough is enough. Provide us electricity, or we will not pay the electricity bills,” said Mohammad Ahsan, 32-year-old private employee at Gulshan-e-Nayab while talking to Dawn.

“The government and the ruling elite considers the public as residents of the enemy country, and humiliates them,” he said.
