PESHAWAR, May 22: The University of Peshawar has introduced a new procedure for promotion of faculty members, which will be based on evaluation of their performance conducted through students.
The decision was taken at a meeting to discuss self-assessment procedure on Wednesday chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohammad Rasul Jan.
Mr Jan said the way of teaching and understanding level achieved could only be judged by the concerned students sitting in classrooms. He said rating of a course teacher would be important in faculty members’ promotion from now onwards.
He said amount of contingency released to various departments of the university would be subject to its ranking among similar disciplines in other varsities of Pakistan.He announced giving best teacher of the year award for each faculty on excellent performance.
The meeting was arranged by the Directorate of Quality Enhancement to look into the objective of the self-assessment programme and its outcome. The vice chancellor said departments like pharmacy, chemistry and biotechnology were performing well and asked the other departments to follow suit.
Assistant registrar Salman Jan told the meeting that each programme and course run by the concerned departments should have a desired mission statement and objective. The students should be capable of having the desired characteristics and competence as designed under the mission statement and programme objectives, he added.
Director Quality Enhancement Sherinzada Khattak set a deadline of June 20 for all the faculties for submission of self-assessment pro forma. The meeting was attended by heads of various departments of the university.
Meanwhile, the UoP Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammad Rasul Jan has said the university is in the process of establishing an ‘Institute of Early Year Education’ to guide students to choose the right profession for them.
The VC disclosed this during a meeting with principals of 21 public sector degree colleges of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The meeting discussed various measures aimed at capacity building and ensuring collaboration among the institutions where BS four years programme was introduced.
The heads of colleges asked for arranging special trainings in the field of research methodology for teachers, which the vice chancellor agreed to arrange. He said teachers should observe complete impartiality and produce competent human resource for the country, according to a press release. — Bureau Report
