GUJRAT, May 22: A local court on Wednesday granted bail to former Gujrat district nazim Syed Noorul Hasan Shah of Kulewal Syedan in a land grab case.

Shah had been accused of occupying a property of his opponents, the Dhola group, in Lalamusa. Police arrested him after registration of a case against him on Tuesday. Earlier, Shah was produced in the court of Kharian Civil Judge Aslam Sial and the judge granted him bail. After acceptance of his bail plea, Shah was set free and brought to Lalamusa in a procession.

Local police had booked 14 people, including Shah and five members of his family, on the report of Irshad Begum, wife of Ghulam Abbas, under sections 480, 148 and 149 of the PPC. Only Shah was arrested in this case. Shah contested the May 11 election in NA-106 as an independent candidate and lost it to Jaafar Iqbal of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

SHOT DEAD: A trader was shot dead allegedly by his in-laws for contracting love marriage at Kotla Arab Ali Khan on Wednesday.

A passerby was also killed when the assailants opened fire at Malik Basharat Hussain, resident of Mian Chohan village, and shot him dead as soon as he opened his shop in the main bazaar. Passerby Ahmed Khan of Rathori village was injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Kharian Civil Hospital.

Police have registered a case against seven nominated and two unidentified assailants. Police said Hussain’s love marriage to a girl from the family of the assailants was the motive behind the incident.
