ELECTIONS are over now with a historic turnout which, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan, was 60 per cent.

People came out despite security threats and other barriers like hot weather to show their love for Pakistan and democracy. But the role of people ended on May 11.

Now the party which is going to form government has a lot to do for the people and the country. There is a need to own Pakistan. This is a time to think beyond political rivalries and grudges.

We need to transform ourselves in a united nation by all definitions. At this stage, Pakistan needs a visionary leadership with abilities to counter the standing crisis like Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia did. He rightly judged the disease and cured it in a good manner. When he was sworn in as the prime minister, religious extremism was among the big problems of his country. Backwardness was a prominent feature of Malaysian society. Economy was at its lowest ebb. But he successfully overcame all these issues because he was determined and sincere. The controversial internal security act which he implemented to curb extremism and turmoil in the country later proved a wise step.

He initiated first automobile manufacturing industry (Proton) in his country which not only gave affordable cars to Malaysian people, but also made the economy of the country better.

Similarly, Pakistan is facing the menace of terrorism and economic meltdown. The energy crisis has become a challenge.Terrorism is adopting new shapes to harm society. Social structure is getting disturbed.

According to reports of organisations such as the UN and the World Bank, the small industry has been largely affected by energy shortage. It means that thousands of families have lost their means to meet ends. Inflation is touching the double digit.

Now it is time to claim Pakistan rather than claim victory in elections. The mandate is a responsibility and not pride because people have cast their votes for Pakistan.

Now it is an option for political parties either to indulge in inappropriate discussions or to rescue Pakistan. If Mahathir can be the prime minister of Malaysia for five consecutive terms on the basis of his performance, why not anyone in Pakistan?

A consultation process can lead us to the path of glory. It is time we showed tolerance for each other and created harmony. Political affiliation is good but it should be for Pakistan because the one who is not sincere with Pakistan cannot deliver to the people.

At the moment, no one should be reluctant to play his role for Pakistan. It is time we acted upon the saying of the Quaid: “Unity, faith and discipline”. Unity among us, faith in development of Pakistan and discipline to achieve that development because we need Pakistan.
