RAWALPINDI, May 19: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) workers and supporters on Sunday afternoon staged a protest on Benazir Bhutto Road in front of Liaquat Bagh after the murder of their leader in Karachi.
PTI Sindh Vice-President Zohra Shahid Hussain was shot dead on May 18 outside her house in Defence Society a day before re-polling at 43 polling stations of Karachi’s NA-250 constituency.
More than 80 PTI supporters and workers blocked Benazir Bhutto Road for an hour and urged the law enforcement agencies to arrest the killers as soon as possible.
The protesters were carrying placards and chanted slogans against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and held its leader Altaf Hussain responsible for the murder of the PTI leader.
“We demand law enforcement agencies to arrest the killers otherwise we know how to tackle them. MQM is afraid from the popularity of PTI in Karachi and is using such tactics to stop people from supporting the party in Karachi,” PTI MPA-elect from PP-13 Arif Abbasi told Dawn.
He said for the first time since 1985, PTI managed to challenge MQM in Karachi with the support of genuine residents of the city and MQM has become afraid as Karachi is getting out of its hands.
“PTI having the support of youth, women and educated people of Karachi was going to make a peaceful Pakistan. The killing of innocent people in Karachi was condemnable and law enforcement agencies should implement state law in Karachi, and book those involved in these crimes,” said Arif Abbasi.
