PESHAWAR, May 7: About 11,000 prisoners, including 2000 juvenile offenders, are spending their lives behind the bars in different prisons of the NWFP.

A data collected by the prison department said the number of under-trial prisoners was 5500 whereas 4600 were convicted for different terms. At least 700 juvenile offenders were under- trial. Among them 90 had been put on probation by the juvenile courts.

Out of 4600 convicted prisoners, 4000 were undergoing rigorous imprisonment whereas 600 facing simple imprisonment. At least 40 prisoners, including 26 under-trial, had been allowed “B” class.

There were 257 women prisoners. Among them 57 had already been convicted whereas 200 were under-trial.

In Peshawar central prison, the number of prisoners were 2001. Out of these 391 were undergoing rigorous imprisonment and 45 simple imprisonment. While 964 inmates were under-trial.—Bureau
