ISLAMABAD Army athletes displayed a thirst for medals as they claimed the top position on the podium after claiming 16 gold medals against Wapda, which had to remain content with four gold medals on the final day of the 42nd National Athletics Championship at the Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex. The event gave the spectators an opportunity to witness some crucial moments while also getting a chance to watch South Asias fastest woman sprinter Naseem Hameed on the track in the 4x100 metres relay race. Naseem's team representing Pakistan Steel though could not put on a medal-winning performance against their competitors as one of their runners crossed into another lane resulting in the team's disqualification from the race. However, in the 4x100m relay race, Wapda's team won the first position, finishing the race in 48.98secs while Higher Education Commission (HEC) got the second position, recording 53.52secs and Punjab third clocking 55.15secs.
Meanwhile, in the 100 metres race, Wapda's Nadia Nazir and Sumera Tayyaba got the first and second position, respectively; clocking 12.30 and 12.95secs while Madiha Latif from HEC finished third, completing the race during 13.16secs.
In the 400m hurdles race, Nadia Nazir and Muzamil Ilyas bagged the first and second position, clocking 103.52 and 105.82secs while Sobia Sultana from HEC finished third, recording 113.58secs.
In the women's 4x400m relay race, Wapda claimed first position while Pakistan Steel finished second and Punjab got the third position.
Rozina Shafwat from Wapda won the top slot in the heptathlon track and field event while Humaira Akmal from Pakistan Steel finished second place and Aila Noor from Wapda also got third position.—Sports Reporter
