THIS is in response to Khurram J. Khan’s letter ‘Victim of tuition culture’ (April 7). I fully endorse the issue highlighted by the writer.

Tuition centres have become a plague to society’s innocent and beneficial culture of regular schools and institutions.

In my case, while doing my matriculation I had not attempted to go for tuition in Class IX. I was shocked by the response and reaction I used to receive.

Fellow students and even a few teachers told me that I would not be able to pass if I do not seek ‘guidance’ from any tuition centre or such an institution.

Teachers are the main reason that this culture has gained popularity.

They encourage students to join tuition centres by threatening them with consequences affecting their grades. Remedial strategies for countering this pestilence are not just the government’s responsibility.

Of course, the system of governance and accountability of teachers at their respective schools should be checked upon, but mostly it is the attitude of teachers which needs to be reformed.
