THE Sindh government announced almost 19,000 jobs in the education department for the selection of teachers. It is a project of the World Bank for promoting education in Sindh.

Jobs were advertised on April 20, 2012, in various newspapers. After waiting for eight months, the government finally announced the test schedule taken by the NTS.

However, the selection is based on the union council quota system. This procedure of selection was also adopted in 2008, which badly failed. Many candidates securing 90 to 95 per cent marks were not allocated seats. However, pass marks were 60 per cent announced by the education minister.

On the one hand, merit was badly compromised in 2008 and seats were sold in open auction by MPAs and MNAs.

On the other hand, the biggest injustice was awarding of 20 marks on the gender basis to women applicants. This left far behind the thousands of most able and competitive students.

The Sindh education minister is requested to select competent and intelligent teachers in order to save the future of our poor students who are getting education in government schools.

Moreover, awarding 20 marks to women on a gender basis should be discarded for promoting the best education. Merit must be insured, seats must be filled on open merit on the taluka or district level.
