LAHORE, Nov 28: A writ petition was filed on Wednesday in the Lahore High Court for a judicial inquiry of the casualties caused by the use of a toxic cough syrup and registration of cases against responsible authorities.

Judicial Activism Panel Chairman Azhar Siddique filed the petition saying there was a dire need to constitute a judicial inquiry tribunal in order to conduct a detailed inquiry of the incident by consulting national/international experts, and public evidence.

He prayed that appropriate directions be issued for the registration of criminal cases against the authorities concerned who acted negligently in a criminal way within the definition of ‘Qatal-e-Amd’ as defined in Section 300 of the PPC while discharging their functions, so that no such incident could occur in future and everyone might perform his duty within the four corners of law.

ADJOURNED: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday adjourned till Nov 30 the hearing of a petition of the Jamaat-i-Islami against political office of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh directed the JI counsel to submit a notification about the election of Zardari as president.

The JI sought a declaration that President Zardari suffered from pre-election disqualification on account of retaining office of the political party at the time of filing nomination papers for the presidential election.

A full bench hearing contempt matter against the president had referred the JI petition to a single bench.
