KARACHI: Central leader of the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro said on Sunday that his party would willingly sacrifice ten prime ministers but would not write a letter to Swiss authorities challenging the president’s immunity, DawnNews reported.

The PPP leader’s comments come less than 24 hours before the Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, is set to appear before the Supreme Court to answer charges of contempt.

The apex court had last month issued a contempt notice to Prime Minister Ashraf for not implementing its order of writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen a money-laundering case against President Zardari.

Pervez Ashraf has been asked to appear before a five-judge bench headed by Justice Asif Khosa on August 27 to respond to the notice.

Speaking at Bilawal House in Karachi on Sunday, Khuhro said that the Pakistani judiciary, under the pretense of the ‘doctrine of necessity’, had always supported martial law and then later apologized.

Further criticising the courts, Khuhro said that the judiciary should now “apologise every month” just as it had apologised after former military dictator Ayub Khan’s death.

Khuhro said that an Indian chief justice had also stated that Pakistan’s judges should refrain from directly interfering in politics. He added that the president has immunity according to the Constitution, and that the courts should rule that no criminal case be tried against Asif Ali Zardari as long as he is the president.
