Pakistan, as a strategic ally in war on terror, has witnessed many retaliatory attacks from militant organisations active in the northwestern part of the country.

Over the years, banned outfits such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, have launched attacks on Pakistani soil killing scores of civilians and security personnel.

Dawn.com presents a timeline of all the main military sites attacked by the militant organisations over the years.

October 2009:

At least 10 gunmen clad in military uniforms and driving a white car attacked the General Headquarters (GHQ) located in Rawalpindi on the morning of October 10.

The GHQ was under siege for several hours where the militants had taken at least 42 hostages. According to Major General Athar Abbas militants presented a list of demands which included the release of some of the most wanted terrorists.

Operation Janbaz was launched to rescue the hostages and the Pakistan Army was able to rescue 39 of them. However, 11 soldiers and three hostages were killed during the attack and operation.

The operation also resulted in the capture of Aqeel aka Dr Usman whereas the other nine attackers were killed.

Amjad Farooqi Group claimed the responsibility of the GHQ attack.

On October 23, a suicide bomber blew himself up near the Minhas military air base in Kamra (Attock), killing eight, including two security officials and six other people, and injuring 17 others.

May 2011:

Several armed gunmen attacked PNS Mehran — one of the most densely populated naval bases located in Karachi — during the early hours of May 22. According to Interior Minister Rehman Malik, four to six armed militants used ladders to climb the naval base, triggering a fierce gun battle and a series of explosions.

One of the attackers was believed to have blown himself up whereas bodies of three others were found. Moreover, two attackers had managed to escape.

According to Malik, the militants invaded the base from three different points adjacent to Karachi’s residential areas.

The attack and operation lasted for 17 hours and resulted in the deaths of 10 security personnel. Two US-manufactured surveillance planes were also destroyed during the attack and the ensuing operation.

The responsibility of the attack was claimed by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

August 2012:

Eight heavily armed personnel launched an attack on Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Minhas Airbase located in Kamra (Attock) in Punjab during the early hours of August 16. All the eight militants were killed by security forces whereas one security man also died during the attack and the ensuing operation.

The militants were carrying explosives, guns and suicide vests.

TTP claimed the responsibility for the attack.

December 2012:

The Pakistan Air Force base inside the Bacha Khan International Airport came under a daring attack by militants, with a simultaneous rocket barrage, resulting in the killing of seven people, including five militants, and injuries to 40 others.

Five rockets were fired at the airport. Two of them landed inside the premises, which also houses the army aviation and air force base used against militants in the adjoining tribal areas.

A spokesman for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan accepted responsibility, saying that the target was the air force base. He added that 10 militants took part in the attack.

I can't believe this opening: "Pakistan, as a strategic ally in war on terror, has witnessed many retaliatory attacks ..." That right there pins the blame for the terrorism in Pakistan on one thing - fighting for the sake of the US and against Pakistani people. However when you see the second sentence: "Over the years, banned outfits such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, have launched attacks on Pakistani soil killing scores of civilians and security personnel. ", you wonder why Pakistanis don't think it is THEIR OWN war. Why do these banned outfits exist, leave aside have the wherewithal to execute attacks? I'm not even going to bother to bring up Lashkar-e-Toiba which is also a banned outfit masquerading as the JuD, that many Pakistanis think is perfectly OK.

We should stop blaming others for our own short commings. I am surprised that despite there hooligans TTP openly claiming responsibility for these attacks the army has not done anything to wipe their existance off the face of this earth

Not sure what you are trying to say? What has this attack got to do with India and US? TTP folks are located in Pakistan so where does US and India come into picture?

Important questions are who is TTP? Who are at the back of them? who is funding them? If they are constantly attacking Pakistan Air force, it feels like a motive behind it that needs to be looked in detail. Pakistan intelligence forces need to be work efficiently and smartly in order to understand their strategies and targets. I don't think TTP can do these kind of attacks without support of some big country who doesn't like to see a peaceful and strong Pakistan

It seems to me God has been on holiday. You should join the army and be proud of yourself. Soldiers do not get strength from God. They get strength from physical training. The Pakistan army does not fight for US dollars. They weren't doing any fighting at all until America took their money away.. Are you having Hinduphobia?

It is nearly time for all Pakistanis to pick up the gun. Nationalism and Unity is just a political slogan. "OUR POLITICANS SHOULD WAKE UP AND STOP LOOTING PUBLIC MONEY." Who will stop them? You will? The politicians are making fast money it is the people of Pakistan who are asleep and afraid.

Brainwashed people believe Taliban are their friends. How can you praise the Pak army and at the same time not mind the Taliban who kill them? It is very easy to identify US or Indian actions but you label all Taliban terrorist actions as those from the US. When the US is truely gone and you are 10 years older, you will realize that you were mistaken. The world doesn't care to help Pakistan anymore, the people are too lost in conspiracies that spread lies and suppress the truth.

Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni. These only terrorists were created by Pakistan and see now Pakistan itself is suffering. Do not blame US and India. We do not believe in terrorism. This was Pakistan which was using terrorism as state policy and encouraged fundamentalism. Now Pakistan itself has to suffer.

There is no doubt that the attack on the Minhas air base is a warning by the TTP and the Haqqani network to the Pakistan army in regard to the slated offensive against militants in South and North Waziristan.__The wanton murder of 20 Shiites in Gilgit on the same day was carried out for good measure.

when you raise a snake at home, it will come to bite you sooner or later. Govt. tolerated talibans for too long even after their fall, now they are spread across and come as they please, someone should ask how they manage to get in after what happened in karachi? as always, security is beefed up AFTER they had come and left. This is not going to change anything, it's time to step on them, hard !!! show no mercy like they show none, they are keen to meet the Maker, so be it, let them have it, but, the question is, how many souls you will lose before you step it up?

Targetting P3C Orions at Mehran and AWACS at Minhas...these aircraft are only used for aerial surveillance against submarines, surface ships and aircraft. I do not think Taliban possess any of these equipment. We all know who has always desired to carry out surgical strikes inside Pakistan. The same entity is the beneficiary of these attacks. Therefore, it is quite clear as to who is the mastermind of these attacks.

Its a conspiracy, simply. TTP is being supported by India and US. The militants are brainwashed by a few people who are nothing but puppets of foreign agencies. Many of these miscreants penetrate into Pakistan from the borders and many such who have been caught are proved foreigners and non-muslims, now what else is needed to prove that foreign agencies are behind that? TTP's acts and statements are totally in contradiction to Islam so now also what more is required to prove that they are not being supported by foreign agencies? Heavy presence of agency people within Pakistan and dozens of Indian embassies working in Afghanistan often with printing press making fake Pakistani Passports, what does all this means? My Indian friends, dont be so innocent, and if you are really that innocentthen look into the insights to get your facts right. In the end, the remaining blame can be put on Pakistan as well for not controlling the fanaticism taking roots and lapses of intelligence, although hats off to our forces who have been protecting the nation so far in a state of war. Allah be with all of us!

Its basically israel politics to week all the muslim of the world. India has nothing to do , but due to its selfish attitude and non cooperative nature and past history it will never achieve good image in the hearts of PAKISTANI weather muslim or else. India has never stand for Pakistan as a good neighbor, secondly It has always supported the Israel and Russian politics to destabilize Pakistan.

The brave armed forces and the people of Pakistan are being let down by this corrupt mafia of rulers. To rid the country of this TTP menace we have to rid the country of this PPP PML nexus first. Their interest lies in lining their own pockets not the safety or security of Pakistan. Nawaz who wanted to be Amir Ul Momaneen is more than responsible for creating this ideology. That is why we hear no condemnation from their top leaders. The PPP is perpetuating this by their greed and incompetence. We should open our eyes before its too late. Our rulers will run away to their palaces with their ill gotten wealth to Dubai or London or Spain, where will the country go??

Turning point of Pakistans problem was Zia Ul Haqs move to patronise many muslim organisation and mullahs for vote bank thus keeping blind eye to their activities and radicalism and hatred of minorities. Today we see violence against Hindus,Shias,Christians and Ahmedis pre Zia Pakistan did not have this type of present problem. Declaring Ahmedis as non muslim but singing the song of praise when World Courts Ahmedi Sir Zafrullah Khan received noble price wearing Pakistani garb makes you think ??
