RAWALPINDI, Aug 1: The Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif is expected to inaugurate three model police stations in the Rawalpindi district on the Independence Day.

The chief minister had approved the plan to make 100 old police stations of the province as model ones with an estimated cost of Rs600,000,00 as he believed that it would help bring about change to the old thana culture and to check the crime.

The construction and renovation work on three police stations of Rawalpindi district was started in May and is expected to be completed before August 14.

A two-member committee headed by superintendent of police headquarters Israr Abbasi has been supervising the renovation work.

As part of the first phase of remodeling, the three police stations, New Town, Rawat and Wah Cantonment, were selected.

DSP Muhammad Shoaib, who is one of the members of the committee, said that the re-modeling of the three police stations had been completed and furniture for the reception and investigation rooms was being purchased.

He said the model police stations would have a separate reception room where a protocol officer with the rank of ASI or SI would be deputed.

The reception room has been built separately from the police station building. As part of the project, the lock-up of the three police stations have been refurbished as fancy floor and wall tiles have been erected in addition to a new ceiling fan and energy savor bulbs.

He said on entering the police station premises, the protocol officer would receive the victim of crime and take him/her to the duty police officer who would receive the complaint and proceed in accordance with the law.

The model police station’s house officer will be given Rs15,000 extra allowance in addition to a BlackBerry, the DSP revealed.

Besides, the toilets of the model police stations have been renovated and a sound proof investigation room with two chairs and an office table have been established where the investigating officer would interrogate the suspect.

He said the door of the investigation room will be made of tempered glass.

Furthermore, the CCTV cameras have also been installed at the entry gate of the model police station for security check.

The government also intends to provide an extra police van, ten motorcycles and investigation kits to each model police station in addition to deploying the best available police officers at the model police stations.

The police van provided to the model police station would be equipped with ‘tracker’ system so that the police movement could be checked by the supervisory officers.
