THIS is with reference to the news item ‘New code of conduct slashes expenses by poll candidates’ (June 28). The reforms introduced in the code of conduct could not be enough to encourage an ordinary citizen to contest for the elections as a candidate.

The amount of Rs1.5 million indicates that election is still the game of the elite. Ordinary citizens are only being used to cast votes for these multi-millionaire and billionaire candidates.

The Election Commission has to centralise the election campaign. Candidates should be obliged to print their posters and banners though a specific printing press on the rate given by the Election Commission. The number of billboards and cars to be used for public meetings should also be defined by it.

It has to make sure that candidates cannot accept or take donations from individuals or business tycoons in the form of cash or in payments of bills.
