HYDERABAD, May 1: Activists of various political parties and trade unions across the province observed the International Labour Day on Tuesday to pay homage to the martyrs of Chicago and demanded that the government should repeal all anti-labourer laws.
In Hyderabad, more than a dozen labour unions, including People’s Labour Bureau, Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union, Green Rural Development Organisation, All Pakistan Trade Unions Organisation and Muttahida Labour Federation, staged rallies, which started from different parts of the city and terminated outside the press club.
The leaders said in their speeches that the contract system, daily wages system and privatisation of national enterprises had rendered tens of thousands of workers jobless.
They said that the industries were not implementing the existing labour laws and demanded that the government should repeal the anti-workers IRO 2002, shelve the privatisation programme, abolish contract system and lift ban on labour unions.
NAWABSHAH: Members of Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union, All-Pakistan Clerk Association (APCA), paramedical staff, rickshaw union, National Bank and other trade unions staged rallies, which started from different places and terminated at the press club.
The leaders said that the government should withdraw anti-labour ordinance 2000 and ordinance 27-B.
SANGHAR: The National Workers Party organised a seminar, which demanded abolition of contract system, end to privatisation, reduction in prices of daily-use items, ban on malpractices of World Bank, IMF and multinational companies, and shelving industrial relations ordinance 2000 and 2002.
DADU: Labourers, social workers and workers unions of federal and provincial government departments held rallies in Dadu, Johi, Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah and Kotri towns.
KHAIRPUR: The Muttahida Mazdoor Federation staged a procession to mark the Labour Day.
The labour leaders comrade Shahbaz Phulpoto and Amjad Lashari who led the procession said that there was virtually no change in workers’ conditions.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Members of PTCL employees union, kiln labourers and nationalist parties staged a rally, which started from the old bus stop in Moro and terminated at the municipal hall where the participants paid tributes to Chicago martyrs.
MITHI: Speakers at a seminar on International Labour Day urged the government to enforce labour laws in letter and spirit and take practical measures to raise the living standard of workers.
The seminar passed a resolution calling for free education up to graduation to the offspring of labourers, free medical care and housing colonies.
