GUJRANWALA, March 4: The taxi drivers association on Sunday demonstrated against the grabbing of the taxi stand on GT Road. Protesters, led by association president Haji Muhammad Saeed, gathered at the taxi stand and chanted slogans against the Nandipur Town tehsil municipal administration for patronizing the landgrabbers.

They said the influential people had grabbed the taxi stand on GT Road, which had already been allotted to drivers some 15 years ago by then mayor Al-Haj Muhammad Aslam Butt.

Despite the issuance of a stay order by a local court in favour of drivers, they said grabbers had constructed shops at the taxi stand and also demolished its boundary wall.

They asked the city district government and other high-ups to take stern action against grabbers.

PROBE: Carrying out a local court’s orders, the Anti-Corruption Establishment on Sunday initiated an inquiry against a police inspector for his alleged involvement in corruption.

Reports said that complainant Muhammad Ashraf had informed the court through a petition that rivals murdered his close relative in Aimanabad a few days back.

He said the police had started investigation after registering a case against the accused. He said investigation in charge inspector Akram Gill received Rs50,000 in bribe from him for the arrest of all accused and completion of the charge sheet swiftly into the bargain. But the inspector neither arrested the accused nor completed the charge sheet. The complainant alleged that the inspector instead intimidated him when he demanded his money back.
