KARACHI: The Sindh health department has decided to establish a forensic DNA laboratory at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) in Karachi University.

The project plan and summary have been finalised between the provincial health department and the ICCBS at the university.

Sindh Health and Population Welfare Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho said this on Saturday after laying the foundation stone of a girls’ hostel at the ICCBS.

Ms Pechuho said in the first phase the health department would provide forensic equipment and funds from the health department’s reserved funds for research. All forensic DNA tests will be provided free of coast in the laboratory, she added.

She said in the second phase the health department would work with ICCBS on breast cancer and stem cell to reduce women’s health problems in the province, adding that unfortunately in the past much politics were played in varsities instead of focusing on modern research.

She said that they were working with ICCBS director Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary for resolving various issues of the centre.
