KARACHI: A teenage girl was killed and 15 others, including children, were injured when a merry-go-round in an amusement park on University Road collapsed on Sunday evening, police said.

DIG-East Amir Farooqi said that the incident took place in the newly inaugurated Askari Amusement Park within the remit of the PIB Colony police station.

He said it appeared that the nut and bolts of the swing detached causing the accident.

The wounded were taken to different hospitals. Additional Police Surgeon of Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi Qarar Ahmed Abbasi said that 16-year-old Kashaf Samad was brought dead to the hospital. She was a resident of Sharafabad.

A total of 15 injured were also brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and nearby Liaquat National Hospital.

After the tragedy, the park was closed for public.

Chief Secretary Azam Suleman ordered closure of the park for three days and it would be reopened only after a technical inspection.

The park is located inside the Old Subzi Mandi. It was inaugurated during Eid holidays and had attracted huge crowds.
