NILPHAMARI (Rangpur): The Governor of East Pakistan, Mr Abdul Monem Khan, yesterday [Oct 14] underlined the need for unity for the progress and solidarity of the country.

Addressing a big public meeting here on the third day of his hectic tour of Rangpur district, he said that the unity displayed by the nation at the time of the September 1965 war would inspire the people to face any challenge in future for the security and defence of the country.

The Governor called for hard work, which, he said, was the only weapon through which the nation could march ahead and find a rightful place in the comity of nations.

He appealed to the students, who were present in the meeting, not to fritter away their energies in slogan-mongering, but to pay their undivided attention to studies.

The Government, headed by President Ayub Khan, he said, was wedded to the policy of ensuring people’s prosperity. Never before had any attention been paid to the rural people who had continued to languish in poverty, he said.

The Governor referred to the factors behind the creation of Pakistan and asked the people to rally round the Muslim League which was responsible for the country’s independence and could alone ensure national unity and solidarity.

Other political parties, he said, had made no contribution to the achievement of Pakistan and were not capable of delivering goods to the people.
