ISLAMABAD: Police have registered a case against an unidentified person for hoisting the flag of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group in the capital.

The case was filed under various sections of the law, including the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

Shortly after the registration of the case, however, the FIR was sealed, a police officer told Dawn. He said the case was registered by the Khanna police in response to a complaint lodged by a police official.

The police said the flag of the banned outfit was spotted by a native of Dera Ismail Khan who then informed the police.

“I recognise the flag is of IS as I have seen it on TV channels before,” the police quoted him as saying.

Another police officer said so far there was no clue as to who hoisted the flag, adding that the CCTV installed near the flag under the Safe City Project had been out of order for many days.

“Either it was just a coincidence that the flag was pulled up at the spot where the CCTV was out of order or those responsible hoisting it were aware of the non-functional camera,” the officer added.

The Khanna police confirmed that an FIR had been registered and then sealed on the directions of senior police officers.

“It will be reopened when an order is issued by the senior officers but its time frame is not known.”
