ISLAMABAD: The Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) will resume its academic activities from Wednesday.

Following violent clashes between two student groups on Saturday, the QAU administration announced to keep the university closed for an indefinite period and got the hostels vacated.

However, the QAU acting registrar, Prof Dr Imtiazuddin, had announced on Tuesday that academic activities would resume from Thursday.

A press release issued by the QAU stated that the entry to the hostels would be subject to confirmation of personal identity and satisfactory search of allotted rooms.

It said a committee of senior faculty members had been formed and assigned the task to investigate the matter and submit recommendations to avoid a similar situation in future.

The students responsible for the violence have been identified and would be dealt with in accordance with the disciplinary rules of the university.

Admissions of office-bearers of Mehran and Baloch councils have been suspended with immediate effect and their cases have been sent to the University Disciplinary Committee for further investigations and final decision.

The statement said all those nominated in the FIR would face the law. In case of mobilisation of students for any kind of illegal activity on the campus, the involved students would be rusticated, it said.

Meanwhile, QAU faculty members, under the umbrella of Academic Staff Association (ASA), staged a protest over reduction in tax rebate from 75pc to 40pc on income tax granted to researchers and academic staff.

A large number of faculty members gathered in front of the university’s central library.

Talking to media, ASA President Dr M. Ishtiaq Ali said the rebate was one of the few incentives granted to Pakistani academics by the government.
