12 killed as Karachi-bound bus collides with truck in Jamshoro

HYDERABAD: At least 12 people were killed in a collision between a bus and a truck early Tuesday near the Thermal Power Station in Jamshoro district, rescue sources said.

Women and children are among more than 20 travellers who have been injured in the incident, and the death toll is expected to rise.

The bus was travelling towards Karachi from Dera Ismail Khan when it met the accident on Indus Highway near Petaro. The bus was speeding and drove into a stationary truck.

Some of the injured were shifted to Liaquat University Hospital in Hyderabad.

A similar accident was reported late in May when a speeding coach overturned and took 10 lives near Hyderabad.

Poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving are cited as common reasons behind accidents in Pakistan. More than 4,600 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2013, which is the last year the government released official data on the matter.

Drivers do not take proper training and are self trained. Either they drive with no licence or they drive with fake licence. Many people are making illegal money in this racket at the cost of innocent passengers.

Early morning collision by bus with a stationary truck was obviously due to fatigued driver who must have dozed for a second. Greed is the reason. Otherwise, there should have been co-driver with one working for a few hours and the other resting for his turn, on long hauls like this one.

Whats wrong with drivers these days. Too many people are dying in many accidents almost every day. Is it because of poor road conditions or simply there are too many careless, suicidal and speeding drivers. Why don't transport authorities investigate cause to so many accidents and try to reduce road accidents?
