LAHORE: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman says he has explained his reservations about the Women Protection Act to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has promised to take ‘appropriate steps’.

Talking to reporters after his meeting with the prime minister at his residence in Jati Umra here on Monday, Maulana Fazl said that he had met the prime minister and discussed the women protection bill on the latter’s invitation. He said the prime minister informed him that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had constituted a committee to discuss and remove ulema’s reservations on the women protection law. He said the government was ready to amend the clauses in the law that confronted the Constitution, law and Shariah.

The JUI-F chief said the chief minister and others were present in the meeting.

In the meantime, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said: “The government will amend the law and exempt Maulana Fazl from wearing a ‘bracelet’”.

He said “Maulana Fazl is otherwise an obedient husband at home but takes a tough stand in public to maintain his stature”.
