I CONGRATULATE Zahid Hussain for his bold article, ‘Reclaiming the original ideology’ (Nov 25). He has rightly suggested that “liberal democracy is the only answer to violent extremism and religious bigotry”.

He has quoted Jinnah in support of his assertion that “the new state (Pakistan) would be a modern democratic state with sovereignty resting on the people and the members of the new nation having equal rights of citizenship regardless of their religion, caste or creed”.

Unfortunately, Liaquat Ali Khan, the first prime minister, nullified Mr Jinnah’s concept of liberal democracy and under the influence of religious elements incorporated the Objectives Resolution as a preamble to the Constitution.

This was a blow to the Quaid-i-Azam’s philosophy and created an intolerant society. This has led to the passing of blasphemy laws and deprived the Ahmadis of their citizens’ rights.

Does the present prime minister have the courage and will to amend the Constitution, repealing blasphemy laws and restoring the rights of all citizens? This is the only way to safeguard the rights of all citizens of Pakistan irrespective of their caste, religion or creed and to begin a new chapter of tolerance.
