PESHAWAR: An anti-terrorism court here on Monday convicted a man of possessing explosive material and other items used for preparing improvised explosive devices and sentenced him to 14 years rigorous imprisonment besides ordering confiscation of his properties.

Following completion of trial, judge Saleem Jan Khan ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused, Abdur Rauf, a resident of Sherkara area in Peshawar, and the evidence on record were enough for connecting him with the commission of the offence.

The accused was arrested few months ago in the jurisdiction of Mathani police station by the police.

The police had seized 2,035kg explosive material along with detonators and ‘primacord’ used for making IEDs and arrested the accused before charging him under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The state prosecutor said the accused was caught red-handed and that he couldn’t prove that the seized items did not belong to him.

Also, the court convicted a man of possessing literature and videos of banned outfits and sentenced him to one-year rigorous imprisonment along with Rs50,000 fine.
