LAHORE/KASUR: A relative of main suspect of Kasur incident was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Ferozepur Road near Bank Stop late on Saturday night.

Kot Lakhpat Sub-Inspector (SI) Mushtaq said an unidentified man, who was killed in an accident on Ferozepur Road, was shifted to Jinnah Hospital morgue by Rescue 1122.

He said the man was later identified as Mohammad Shafi, 48, of Husain Khanwala and uncle of a Kasur incident suspect, Haseem.

JIT continues to record statements of victims and witnesses

Shafi is the brother of suspects Muhammad Akhtar Yahya, Saleem Akhtar Sharazi, Attiqul Rehman, Tanzeelur Rehman who were arrested in the child abuse case.

On the other hand, the family alleged that Shafi and his nephew Waseem Abid were taken into custody by eight policemen of Kasur on Aug 3 from their pesticides shop at Husain Khanwala.

They alleged that Kasur CIA Inspector Ghulam Fareed, A-Division SHO Inspector Malik Tariq Mehmood, Ganda Singhwala SHO Tariq Bashir Cheema and B-Division SHO Malik Tariq had tortured Shafi to death and threw his body on Ferozepur Road. The family of Shafi later gathered outside the chief minister’s house on The Mall and protested against the Kasur police for `killing’ him.

Shafi’s brother Khadim Husain told Dawn that now police were terming the killing an accident but they first took his brother into custody and later tortured him to death.

It was learnt that the family of Shafi had filed a writ petition in a local court against Mobeen Ghaznavi, one who is leading the villagers, alleging that Ghaznavi had kidnapped Shafi.

The plaintiff had appealed to the court for the recovery of Shafi and a case against Ghaznavi. The case was to be heard on Monday (today).

In a late night development, Lahore’s Nishtar Colony police have registered a case against the four policemen and Mobeen Ghaznavi, Master Ahmed Din, Sultan Shahzad, Ibrahim, residents of Husain Khanwala, under sections 395 and 302 of Pakistan Penal Code.

Meanwhile, the joint investigation team continued to record the statements of the victims and the witnesses on the fifth day at a rest house in Kasur.

SSP Ali Nasir Rizvi had taken the charge of Kasur DPO while Muhammad Saleem Warrich held his office of City circle DSP. The seat of SP (investigation) vacated by Nadeem Abbas after being made OSD is lying vacant.

Pervaiz Elahi

Former chief minister Pervaiz Elahi during a visit to the area on Sunday said the incident was not the outcome of some property dispute (zameen) but of conscience (zameer).

He alleged that Law Minister Rana Sanaullah was portraying it differently to save the suspects.

Referring to the Model Town incident, he said Rana Sana should not have assumed the office of the law minister on moral grounds.
