Nawaz, Modi to rendezvous in Russia

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian counterpart Narendra Modi are set to meet on the sidelines of a security summit in Russia on July 10, NDTV reported.

The meeting will take place in the Russian city of Ufa as the leaders attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, sources confirmed to NDTV.

Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Qazi Khalilullah last week said the two leaders may meet on the sidelines of the summit, but added there had been no formal contact between the two leaders regarding such a meeting.

Indian PM Modi is expected to raise India’s concerns regarding terrorism, including the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi who was allowed to walk free in April, sources say.

Pakistan and India's presence at the summit comes as both countries have started the process of joining the security bloc led by China and Russia.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said ”...India and Pakistan's admission to the SCO will play an important role in the SCO's development, it will play a constructive role in pushing for the improvement of their bilateral relations.”

It is the first time the grouping has expanded since 2001.

Great picture of Nawaz and Modi! They look good - smiling together and warmly shaking hands with each other When they meet in Russia, they must step up to prove their leadership in order to agree upon the agenda to be discussed at the summit between the two which should be held as soon as possible in Islamabad or Delhi. People of India and Pakistan deserve to live normal lives, meet each other and trade with each other in peace and with security. Nawaz and Modi should make their place in history by tearing down the walls and barriers which exist between the two countries. Modi and Nawaz have a choice to be run of the mill politicians and maintain status OR to be real leaders for changing the destiny of their nations and thus that of the South Asia

I get the feeling that NS wants to get along well with Modi and take advantage of India's financial growth for Pakistan's benefit. But the establishment doesn't want him to. We need to make a choice between rivalry and self-interest of the nation.

Foreign should also list out what issues Pak PM will raise such as Indian involvement in perpetuating terrorism in Pakistan. Pakistan should stop taking Indian allegations laying down. Be aggressive in dealing with Modi and thwart his attempts to be a bully.

@Shahid : Believe me the feeling is mutual. Really there is no meaning to meeting on the sidelines some where in distant Russia, when there are ample opportunities to meet bilaterally right at home in the sub continent. Hopefully, they will be dressed in their best attire at least for some good pics.

@SK This is precisely the low self esteem that Indians are famous for. When it was offered to India in the 1940s, Nehru magnanimously gave it away to China. China grabbed it even though its economy was behind India's then. Time for all south Asians to develop some confidence. For true self confidence, no one can beat the Americans.
