KARACHI: Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar said Saturday that the Karachi operation is completely apolitical, adding that it will continue without any discrimination.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the National Defence University at a private hotel in Karachi, the corps commander said, "I assure citizens that our struggle against terrorism will continue unabated."
He said that the fight is against terrorists, extortionists, target killers, kidnappers and other criminals, underscoring that there is no room for failure at this crucial stage.
"We are committed to eliminating all forms of terrorism," said Gen Mukhtar.
The corps commander reiterated that all political stakeholders must contribute in order to improve Karachi's law and order situation. He said that the authorities and police must be devoid of political influence, adding that merit and accountability must be given supreme importance to ensure progress.
Gen Mukhtar said thousands of people have been have been killed in incidents of terrorism — including civilians and military officials.
He also said that various neighbourhoods in Karachi were strongholds of mafia gangs.
Gen Mukhtar commenced his seminar by sharing facts and figures pertaining to Karachi such as its ethnic diversity, revenues and population demographic.
"Karachi generates 65 per cent of the country's total income," he said.
"Karachi has been a victim of violence since the mid-80's, and constant unrest in the country's financial capital has negatively impacted the already ailing economy".
"The problems in Karachi are a result of political, sectarian and ethnic rivalries," Gen Mukhtar said. "However, the roots run deep into the complex structures of this city."

I think you must make a use of technology in order to detect terriorists.Cctv surevillance could be a big help.You can not petrol every inch of the city therefore help of technology will render great benefit in countering terrorism.Use helicopters and thermal sensors to detect runway extremists.

General is absolutely right, law enforcing agencies need to be apolitical to carry out across the board operation to weed out criminality particularly in Karachi and generally in every part of our country, unfortunately the resolve shown by military leadership is missing in political class, still engaged in bashing each other for gaining petty political mileage, lets hope for the best possible out come of current endeavour initiated by Pak Army to bring peace in the city.

Agreed. In a large metropolis like Karachi, Surveilance cameras are needed at every major road intersection. The evidence such surveilance infrastructure provides is invaluable. Everyone has these: UK, US, China etc.

General Mukhtar the Sind Police should be under the Army as are the Rangers and the civilian administration handed over to honest and competent people. Without this the operation will not succeed. It is upto the Army to decide its success or failure. The Army cannot do it alone.

General Mukhtar and the leaders of on going operation do not realize that Karachi has reached this state due to complete neglect of governments in centre and province. Karachi major problems are land mafia, tanker mafia , bureaucrat and politicians mafia. Once a beautiful city has been brought to the level of grand slum.There is no water supply in most parts of city,sewerage overflowing, storm water drains choked and roads in almost all the neighbor hood destroyed, creating traffic hazard and dust. There is no transport system in mega city and traffic chaos.Government schools almost non functional teaching unfair means to get through exams.
Unless these issues are addressed, grand operation will not have long lasting results. Some body has to give Karachi good administration free from corruption .

If operation is fair what about weapons of Zulfiqar Mirza. What he did every thing watch on tv? Like him there are tons of wadera, sardaras and Chowdaries in posh areas of Karachi, they all have their own army.
We all are witness, we lives in their niegborhoods.
Looks like this operation is only for poor or middle class people who took weapons to defend themselves from 2 % people oppression.

In order to be successful the provisional government need to be focused, honest and sincere.Police should be apolitical. Punish all terrorist across the board. Those parties who are behind these groups must be eliminated or banned. This exercise should be on a continuous bases. I live in USA and we had once a major problem in New Orleans for high corruption, drugs and murders and corrupt police. Now it is gone and by persistent by civilian government with the help of federal government these elements are gone for good. Let us work hard and get rid of all terrorists, extortionists, land grabbers, target killers, bribes lookers, and religious mongers.
