KARACHI: Three suspected militants were killed in a reported encounter with police in Baldia Town here on Sunday evening.

Officials said that a police mobile van was patrolling the area when it came under a grenade attack near a bus terminal in Ittehad Town. The grenade explosion left two policemen wounded.

“The attackers fired shots at the police mobile, which carried six policemen,” said SP Ejaz Hashmi. “The police team retaliated and in the exchange of fire three of the attackers were killed. None of them has been identified.”

He said police believed that some attackers had managed to escape.

He said that bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The wounded policemen were also taken to a hospital where they were said to be out of danger, he added.

“The association of the deceased with any particular group is not yet clear but initial findings suggest that they were members of a militant outfit. The police have also recovered pistols and hand-grenades from their possession,” the SP added.
