KARACHI: Two policemen were killed and as many others were wounded in separate incidents in the city on Tuesday.

Police said that two policemen were standing at a police checkpoint at the Banaras traffic intersection when armed pillion riders emerged there, fired at them and rode away.

Constables Sajid Mehmood, 40, and Kabeer Aslam, 35, sustained critical bullet wounds and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors declared Mehmood dead.

The police suspected the involvement of certain drug peddlers in the incident.

In the second incident, a policeman was shot dead and another wounded in an encounter in Ferozabad. Police said that two robbers were looting passers-by on Khalid bin Waleed Road when a police patrol reached there.

In an ensuing encounter, one policeman, Mohammed Marfat Shah, 32, was killed and constable Mehtab Imtiaz, 35, was wounded.

The Ferozabad police said both robbers managed to escape in a wounded condition.

The dead and wounded were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
