PESHAWAR: An anti-terrorism court here on Thursday convicted an accused of attacking a police raiding party and resultant death of an SHO and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs1 million besides ordering confiscation of his properties.

Judge Saleem Jan Khan pronounced the verdict after completion of arguments by the prosecution and defence and ruled that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused, Raees Khan, a resident of Regi area, Peshawar.

The court also declared three of the absconding accused named Noor Mohammad, Rahat and Abdullah as proclaimed offenders and issued their perpetual arrest warrants.

According to the prosecution, a police party headed by SHO Farhad Ali had raided a residence in Regi following a tip-off about presence of a wanted suspect Noor Mohammad on May 29, 2011. It was alleged that when the police reached the area firing started from inside the residence.

The ensuing fire exchange resulted in killing of Jan Mohammad, son of Noor Mohammad, whereas Farhad Ali received critical injuries and died later.

The court also directed that that the amount of fine should be given to the legal heirs of the deceased police officer.— Bureau Report
