KARACHI: The general secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jumaat (ASWJ) Karachi chapter, Dr Fayyaz, along with his driver was killed on Wednesday evening when two armed riders opened fire at their car in Shershah area of the metropolis.

SSP West said that armed assailants targeted the car of ASWJ leader. “Both the attackers were wearing helmets. The two were in a car when unknown gunmen started shooting at their vehicle.”

The spokesperson of ASWJ confirmed the death of Dr Fayyaz and strongly condemned the attack. He asked the government to arrest those behind the killing of their leader.

A large number of police and Rangers personnel reached the spot and cordoned off the area as a probe into the incident went underway.

In the previous month, a mosque's prayer leader identified as ASWJ leader was killed at Safoora Chowk next to Johar Complex. Meanwhile, a young man, said to be a sympathiser of the ASWJ, was found shot dead in Orangi Town.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Later, the body was identified as that of Abdul Raheem aka Guddu, 25. He was a rickshaw driver.

ASWJ is the reincarnation of Sipah-i-Sahaba, which is a sectarian group responsible for carrying out terrorist activities in the country.
