Lahore crowned Inter-board Games champion

ISLAMABAD: Boy athletes associated with the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore clinched the trophy of the third Inter-board Games, concluded at the Pakistan Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Hundreds of players from 25 education boards participated in boys competitions in five disciplines, namely, hockey, volleyball, athletics, badminton and taekwondo.

Girls competitions will start from Friday.

Lahore won overall 17 medals, including eight gold medals, while Faisalabad won 13 medals including four golds followed by Gujranwala, whose players won 10 medals with one gold medal.

In hockey’s final, played at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium here, BISE Bannu defeated Lahore 6-2.

Bannu striker Zakirullah’s hat-trick guided his team to make a convincing win.

In the first 10 minutes of the game, both teams kept attacking each other’s goal posts brilliantly.

However, in the 14th minute of the game, Bannu’s striker Zakirullah managed to throw the ball into Lahore’s net.

In the second quarter, Lahore’s strikers received a penalty-stroke, which was convincingly placed by Mohammad Mateen.

But, in very next minutes, Bannu’s fullback Shah Fahad scored another goal for his team.

Then, shortly in the 27th minute, Bannu’s Amjad Ali extended the lead.

At the end of the second quart, Bannu was leading 3-1.

Lahore’s defenders could not stop Zakarullah, who scored two back-to-back goals for his team.

In the start of the final quart, Lahore got a penalty-corner and Hashir Ali made no mistake in sending it to Bannu’s net.

But in the 49th minute, Bannu’s Aamir Farooq scored another goal for his team.

During the last 10 minutes of the game, Lahore made many moves but lacked finishing.

In the 59kg taekwondo final, BISE Multan’s Abdul Haziq won the gold after defeating Shazim Javed of BISE Gujranwala.

In the 63kg category, BISE Bannu’s Aftab defeated Ahtisham of BISE Faisalabad while in the 68kg category, Mudasir Riaz of Multan beat Idress Khan of BISE Dera Ismail Khan.

In the volleyball final, Board of Technical Education defeated BISE Bannu 3-1 while in the badminton final BISE Lahore defeated Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education 3-1.

Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, director general of the Pakistan Sports Board, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

Cash prizes amounting to Rs7,000, Rs5,000 and Rs3,000 were awarded to the winners of gold, silver and bronze medals of each discipline.

In the team events, cash prizes amounting to Rs3,500, Rs2,500 and Rs1,500 were also awarded to the first three position holders.

Pakistan Handball Federation’s president Mohammad Shafiq, National Federations director Azam Dar, Shazia Ejaz and others were present at the prize-distribution ceremony.
