PESHAWAR: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Sirajul Haq has asked US President Barak Obama to pressurize the Indian government during his visit to New Delhi to stop human right violations in occupied Kashmir and resolve the dispute according to the United Nations resolutions.

The JI chief made the statement after offering fateha on the death of party worker, Haji Shocha Gul Shinwari, in Landi Kotal here on Saturday.

He claimed that the US government wanted to give India the role of policeman in South Asia to establish its hegemony in the region, according to a press release. Mr Haq said that people of the region would never accept hegemony of India over them.

He said that President Obama should exert pressure on the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resolve the issue of Kashmir through the relevant UN resolutions. He said that Mr Obama should also take up the issue of human rights violations in India, particularly in the held Kashmir, during his visit.

The JI chief asked the federal government to abolish the Frontier Crimes Regulation from Fata instead of wasting time on making amendments to the draconian law. He said that FCR had become redundant and time had come to introduce drastic reforms in the area. He said that Fata needed a system that protected fundamental rights of the local people.

Mr Haq said that people of Fata had been ignored since creation of Pakistan, and that was why the area remained under developed. He also criticised Fata parliamentarians for not paying attention to their constituencies.
