SHANGHAI: China's state-run Xinhua News Agency is reporting that 35 people have been killed in a stampede during the city's New Year's celebrations.

The report cites the Shanghai government as saying that another 42 people were injured. The report says the deaths and injuries occurred at the city's riverfront Bund area, which can be jammed with spectators for major events.
