LHCBA to start movement against formation of military courts

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has decided to commence a movement against the formation of military courts to try terror suspects in the country.

The LHCBA, which announced its vehement opposition to the idea of military courts on Wednesday, has also summoned a meeting of members of the legal fraternity to discuss their reservations in this regard.

According to the LHCBA secretary, there is no room for the establishment of military courts in the Constitution. The Bar Association secretary Mian Ahmad Chachar, said the law body would also register a protest against the formation of these courts and that it was prepared to go to any lengths in order to create an obstacle in this regard.

Last week, a meeting of parliamentary leaders at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad had reached a consensus over the issue of setting up military courts for tackling terrorism cases in the country. These have since become a subject of controversy with certain political parties already expressing reservations on the proposed establishment of military courts.
