KARACHI: Robbers struck the head office of the Edhi Foundation in the Mithadar area of Karachi where they held all the staff including renowned philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi hostage and made away with gold, foreign currency and other valuables worth millions of rupees.
Eight robbers stormed into the Edhi headquarters around 9:45am and broke into storage lockers that contained five kilograms of gold, foreign and local currency worth millions of rupees, according to Faisal Edhi who is the son of Abdul Sattar.
The robbers easily managed to escape from the site after an extended period of looting.
Abdul Sattar Edhi told Dawn that the looted valuables included deposits made by people.
"This [dacoity] has never happened before...I have been held up before, but was let go without being looted," Edhi said.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered police to immediately arrest the culprits behind the incident.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons at the Mithadar police station on the complaint of Faisal Edhi.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) also issued a statement in condemnation of the looting and demanded the immediate arrest of the robbers.

FIR for theft was registered very quickly without Army or Court intervention as it was against "Namaloom Afraad". Compare this with FIR for 14 murders in Lahore which took several months and Court and Army intervention as the culprits were known and influential.

Why, for the last so many years we have been robbed in the matter of taxes of hundreds of millions.Then on daily basis we are robbed on streets, in our own homes, in our shops... A new low is reached every day in this fair city! To rob a charitable institution must rank amongst the lowest. Surely there was CCTV footage and some descriptions from the staff, some hint of their ethnicity, language, demeanor. from hearsay these dacoits are not at all bashful and don't even bother to cover their faces as etiquettes of hold ups dictate! Thumbing their noses at the ineffectual, effete, and incompetent authorities. Hopefully this will bring some results and bring these lowlifes to justice. I am surprised that Edhi sahib keeps gold and foreign currency on site, maybe he should be keeping local currency as cash at hand and transfer all the other valuables to a safe deposit box at the end of every day as done in most businesses which deal with high volume cash.

On a side note: These were some smart criminals. Infact the idea of robbing Edhi head office is so ingeniously simple it's surprising it hasn't been done before. The Edhi staff would have likely been living in a bubble, trusting that there would be a hierarchy of morals amongst robbers and thieves. The Idea is so foolish it should be discarded immediately. Minimal security to no security at the office, compliant and soft middle class staff, lots of cash and valuable objects.

@Furqan Bank lockers are regularly looted in karachi also. The PML N and PPP alongwith all the politicians have failed to contain the situation. Even rangers cannot contain the situation in karachi. We have looters of all kind ethnic, sectarian and TTP types roaming the city. Police is totally politicised and does not come from the communities that they are policing. Hence there is complete breach of trust between people and police. We are inching towards civil war in Pakistan if we try to preserve democracy.

@Junaid : Unfortunately Pakistan has reached a point of "No Return" to Law and order and the only alternative is (1) a military rule (2) House to house search in every home in Pakistan (3) capture or shoot all owners of weapons (4) capture or shoot all owners or carriers of weapons and this should continue until all terrorist gangs are eliminated in all areas of Pakistan. This Military rule is last resort to bring stability in Pakistan because politicians have failed to do so.

Although such incidents are regrettable but even institutions such as Edhi Trust are often victims of theft or fraud, so police may have to probe within the inner circle by undertaking strict security tests. Whilst condemnation may be levied, Mr Edhi may have a lot of explanation to do as to the reasons such large cache of money and precious metal was not in the vaults of banks for safe keeping. Edhi Trust is doing an impeccable job, but Edhi Trust or for that matter any Trust, FBR should step in to make it mandatory on Trusts to strict audit procedures by international firms so as transparency is maintained, an absolute must providing greater confidence to donors whilst maintaining secrecy of donor lists.

What can you expect of the traditional "Thug" Governance in the country. They even killed a well known person Hakim Saeed of Hamdard Foundation who was the Governor of Sind also, so anything is possible in a country that has nothing but Anarchy and NO..Yes NO LAW AND ORDER.

People question and argue about the current PTI sit-ins and that it is devastating for the country i question that if this is the performance of those in power than people have every right to protest against the current regime. This is so saddening.

Why did he have millions sitting at home/at the center? He should've been more responsible, don't you think? Edhi is amazing and all but you really can't blame the ' dacoits' for not having morals( they are dacoits after all). Also, every Pakistani deserves safety so stop saying that 'its unfortunate that people like Edhi aren't safe' it's disgraceful that noone is.

Chief Minister and the Governor should resign, Inspector General Police should be sacked and the new I.G. be given only twenty-four hours to apprehend the culprits. The employment of whole of Mithadar police station staff must be terminated with immediate effect and without recourse.

I respect Edhi and have supported him with donations in the past. Sorry that the center lost so much.
However, extremely puzzled to see 5 kg of gold and so much cash stored in lockers at the center...don't suspect any fishy business but am surprised at how the center safeguards precious resources - not very reassuring.

Good to see so many condemnations. It is correct that we should not blame any particular party or institution. However, government as well as law enforcement agencies should now gear up in honest and sincere services by ensuring capture of culprits and recovery of loot. Additionally, it should also be ensured that incidents like this should be fully prevented in future by learning from loop-holes and mistakes.

Pakistanis should not totally condemn themselves for the act of a few robbers, although the crime is despicable. It would be good if the government nabs the robbers fast and recovers the money. Otherwise, it can compensate the foundation. It should also ensure that such a large sum and so much gold is not kept in the premises.
