PESHAWAR: Unknown assailants on Friday shot dead a traffic policeman at Chongi Chowk in limits of Bala Maneri police station here.

An investigation officer, while referring to the initial details said that constable Ihsanullah Khan was performing duty near a bus stand when the attackers riding a car came there and opened fire on him with a pistol, killing him on the spot. The attackers escaped the area.

It is to be recalled that a traffic warden, Sub-Inspector Muslim Khan, was killed by unknown gunmen in May this year.

Another traffic policeman was killed at Pejagi road in July.

The funeral prayer of the policeman was offered at Malik Saad Khan Police Lines attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani, Capital City Police Officer Ijaz Ahmed Khan and SSP Peshawar Najeeb-ur-Rehman.

An official of Bala Maneri police station said that a case had been registered against unidentified terrorists under terrorism act and efforts were underway to trace the killers.

“We have informed policemen at all checkpoints and checkposts to continue checking of all cars to arrest the accused at all costs,” the official said.

Meanwhile, police arrested five drug smugglers, including three women, and recovered over five kilogram heroin powder from them on Friday.

An official said the drugs were recovered from a car (LOZ -7275) during checking near Amin Hotel Hashtnagri on GT Road. A case was registered against the arrested persons. — Bureau Report
