LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Imtiaz Ahmad on Wednesday constituted a new full bench to hear a petition questioning functioning and legal status of Model Town inquiry tribunal.

Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan will head the full bench while Justice Anwarul Haq and Justice Abdul Sattar Asghar are its other members. The bench will resume hearing of the petition on July 25.

A citizen, Qamar Sohail, filed the petition saying the constitution of tribunal comprising judges of superior courts was against the honour of judiciary.

He said in the past several judicial commissions were constituted but their recommendations were never implemented, which put a question mark on the independence of judiciary.

He requested the court to restrain the inquiry tribunal from holding proceedings on Model Town incident.

The petitioner's counsel had objected to the formation of the full bench hearing the case earlier.

The bench had referred the matter to the LHC chief justice.
