KARACHI: A security guard belonging to Pakistan Navy was killed in an attack on the car of a senior navy officer in Defence Phase II on Wednesday, according to officials.

SSP (South) Nasir Aftab said that it was not a targeted killing but a robbery attempt.

Defence SHO Ubaidullah Khan said that the navy officer in plain clothes withdrew some cash from a bank in the area and was travelling in a private car when two armed robbers riding a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle in Defence Avenue. When they saw a guard sitting in the car holding a gun, they fired at him and sped away, the SHO said.

In the attack, Fayaz Qayum, 35, said to be navy policeman, was wounded and was taken to PNS Shifa where doctors pronounced him dead. Later, his body was brought to the JPMC for a post-mortem examination. A hospital official said he sustained a single bullet wound in the chest. The victim, a resident of Sultanabad, originally hailed from Abbotabad.
