PM calls urgent meeting on national security

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called an urgent meeting of the cabinet committee on national security on Thursday at PM House, official sources told Dawn.com on Wednesday.

Federal ministers for defence, interior, information and adviser on national security have been invited to attend the meeting.

Chairman joint chiefs of staff committee, three services chiefs, DG IB, DG ISI are also expected to attend the meeting.

“Latest developments with regard to government, Taliban peace talks would come under consideration,” said a cabinet source.

Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan would brief the participants about the latest situation of the dialogue process between government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban including demands of the umbrella militant group.

The cabinet source said that recent Afghan elections and the impact of its result would also come under consideration.

This is the first time in last one month that civil and military leadership would face each other after tension rose between them due to statements of few cabinet members against the military establishment.

Hope none has sabotaged the ongoing negotiations with outlaws criminals who have once again openly challenged the writ of the state by not extending the cease fire. The PM must initiate stern operation against them and extend security shelter to the innocent people across the country.

With so many high-ranking officers (military and political) gathering, can we finally be hopeful that something concrete will finally come out of this meeting? That it will be unanimously agreed that the Talibans are no good and they must be destroyed? That our children deserve a better future? That our citizens cannot be held hostage in their own country? That billions that are being spent to protect our country will finally be put to some good use? That bullies are just bullies and we don't need to be afraid of them? That all Pakistanis can once again be proud of their nation, their military and their government? That all the insurgents around the world are sent a message - loud and clear - that Pakistan will never be a save haven for them and that they better cease their barbarian activities or find somewhere else to conduct them? For the sake of our beloved country, I hope the answer is a big YES!

@independentthinker: And how would you finish them off when in last 10 years we have done everything in our hand to fight them and not succeeded. A coalition of 37 countries have tried the same for a decade and spent some 1,3 trillion USD but at last accepted the defeat. Is there any where in the world where such a strong reactionary group has been fought out except in SL where the Tamils where locked by the sea on 3 sides. At last we have sit at a talks table today or tomorrow and then minimize the group which we have to fight.

I hope government comes up with some solid stance instead of firing from the shoulders of Army and then if something goes wrong as in Kargil blaming Army for it.

Matric passed Nawaz and his perpetual meetings. Nawaz will discuss surrender terms. Since Nawaz and his brother are apologists for TTP. And have sold the country down river, what else could the man want to discuss? The price of tea in China?

@Anila: I have repeatedly said that the reason why I don't think foreign powers have been successful is because they are not fighting at their home front. They are going after them in foreign countries, where more often then not, they are faced with hostility. Our military is fighting them in our own country - they are being supported by the locals, who are sick and tired of the Talibans. We have the equipment to fight them, far more sophisticated then theirs. By you saying others have failed - are you implying that because we risk losing, we should just surrender? I surely hope most Pakistanis don't share your views - at least not our government leaders or military personnel!

@Anila: Thank God that you did not loose any family member to bomb blasts, suicide bombers, indiscriminate killings, targeted killings and such. Ask the families of 58,000 who were killed. What they think. How they feel. Real stakeholders. Talk to more than 200,000 injured. Some permanently. Then give advice.

Nawaz Sharif should categorically order his ministers to stop using abusive language against the most important & highly respectable & disciplined establishment of Pakistan. Before taunting Pervaiz Musharraf the concerned ministers should understand fully well he has given 40 years to Pakistan Army he is still known as an ex-army general which will remain with him until his last day, so how can anyone say that Pervaiz Musharraf is only a civilian now.
