ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered authorities to conduct a fresh probe into philanthropist Parveen Rehman's murder after a judicial inquiry revealed police officers had manipulated the investigation, DawnNews reported.

A two-member bench of the apex court on Tuesday headed by Jusitce Nasir-ul-Mulk resumed the hearing over a petition filed in relation to the murder of the renowned philanthropist.

Rehman, the director of the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), was gunned down in Karachi on March 13 last year and police had claimed to have killed Taliban commander Qari Bilal a day later, who was allegedly involved in the killing.

A report of the judicial inquiry into the investigation of the incident was presented in the court today, according to which police investigators had manipulated the murder probe.

The report had also recommended that the whole case be re-investigated by “efficient, independent and honest police officer(s)”.

Expressing concern over the incompetent performance of the Sindh police department, the court ordered the provincial government to conduct a fresh review of the matter.

The court further said that the inclusion of anti-terror clauses in the case should also be considered.

Subsequently, the hearing of the case was adjourned until May 6.
