KARACHI: A passerby was shot dead apparently in an attack on a police constable posted in the crime branch in Kharadar on Wednesday evening, officials said.

Two gunmen riding a motorcycle intercepted a police constable, Fahad Rasheed, on Parya Street and asked him his name, went away for a while only to come back and open indiscriminate fire, said Kharadar SHO Zafar Iqbal.

In the firing, the policeman and two passers Abdul Hameed and Arif Usman sustained gunshot wounds, the SHO said.

The wounded were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors declared Hameed dead on arrival. The policeman was discharged after being given first aid, the officer said.

Suspect killed in ‘encounter’

A suspect allegedly involved in the murder of policemen and others was killed in what police described as an encounter in Mauripur on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference following the encounter, Keamari SP Zaffar Ali Shah said three suspects riding a motorcycle opened fire near Hawkesbay when they were signalled to stop by a police patrol.

In an ensuing exchange of fire, he said, one suspect was arrested in injured condition while his two accomplices managed to escape. The wounded suspect, identified as Umair Hameed, was taken to Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors pronounced him as dead.

“The deceased was involved in the murder of two CID police officials Sohail and Khurram Shahzad and three others,” said the police officer, adding that Umair belonged to the Baba Ladla gang of Lyari.

Driver found shot dead in Korangi

A 27-year-old man was found shot dead in the Zaman Town area of Korangi on Wednesday morning, the police said.

They added that the bullet-riddled body of Feroz Hashim was found in Sector-51-B of Korangi near 100 Quarters.

The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. Quoting the family, the police said that the victim left his home in Juma Goth on Tuesday night, but did not return. The victim was a driver by profession.

Remains of girl found

The remains of a teenage girl killed a few days ago were found in the Sachal area on Wednesday morning, police said.

They added that the remains of the 17-year-old unidentified girl were recovered from the ground of Old Ravian Society near Jauhar Complex. They were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors said the girl was killed four to five days ago. The police said that investigation was under way to ascertain her identity.
