PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has finalised arrangements for holding by-election in the provincial assembly constituency PK-50, Haripur-II, for which polling will be held on Thursday (tomorrow).
Seven candidates, including Mohammad Tahir Qureshi (PPPP), Mst Irum Fatima (ANP), Akbar Ayub (PTI), Mohammad Asad (PML-N) and independents Mohammad Shehryar, Mohammad Shakil and Babar Nawaz, are in the run to grab this seat.
The commission has set up a total of 116 polling stations and 288 polling booths for the election. Similarly, 116 presiding officers, 288 assistant presiding officers and 288 polling officers have been appointed for the by-election.
The seat had fallen vacant after Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s elected MPA from this constituency, Yousaf Ayub Khan, was disqualified by an election tribunal in Sept 2013 and subsequently the Supreme Court also upheld his disqualification.
The tribunal had declared that Mr Ayub was not righteous and sagacious in terms of Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution as he had submitted fake graduation degree in the previous election.
According to a press release issued here, the election campaign was set to end by Tuesday midnight.
Polling will be started at 8:00am and continued up to 5:00pm and voters present on the premises of polling stations will be allowed to cast their votes. It said that election material had already been supplied to the concerned RO, who would hand over the same to the presiding officers.
Provincial Election Commissioner Sono Khan Baloch has urged people of the constituency to cast their votes.
